Lucy Family Institute invites global industry innovator, Robert Slone, as affiliated faculty

The University of Notre Dame’s Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society is pleased to welcome Robert Slone, senior vice president and chief scientist at UL Solutions, as a new affiliated faculty member. Slone brings extensive leadership and scientific expertise that will support collaborations within the Institute to drive Responsible, Inclusive, Safe, and Empowering (RISE)  AI innovations.

At UL Solutions—a global safety science company that provides testing, inspection, certification, and related services—Slone guides scientific innovation and technical expertise across safety, security, and sustainability. With nearly 30 years of experience, he has driven research and development initiatives, led deeply technical cross-disciplinary teams, and helped shape global scientific standards.

“I’m excited to collaborate with the Lucy Family Institute to help advance AI that is grounded in strong science and designed for real-world impact,” said Slone. “Bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from academia and global industry is essential to shaping AI to be human-centered, enabling it to address complex challenges and deliver meaningful benefits for society.”

Slone has been recognized for his contributions to science and safety, including election to IEC Market Strategy Board and as a co-founding partner of the New York Academy of Science’s International Science Reserve executive board. Additionally, he is named as an inventor on 22 patents and has authored 25 publications across diverse technical fields, reflecting his commitment to advancing applied science. Slone is a member of the Forbes Technology Council and regularly advocates for safety science at public engagements around the world.

Slone’s affiliation with the Institute will also support the University’s broader Data, AI, and Computing Initiative by fostering collaboration across disciplines and connecting academic research with industry perspectives. His involvement will contribute to efforts aimed at advancing purposeful AI and computing solutions that respond to pressing societal challenges.
